From the Baglamukhi root mantra to the Mahamrityunjaya — five mantras with notes on usage and pronunciation.
Mantra is the most accessible form of sadhana. It requires no special equipment, no specific location, no elaborate preparation. A devotee with a clean tongue, a steady seat, and a few minutes of unbroken attention can practise mantra anywhere, at any time. Over the years devotees frequently ask which mantras are most worth knowing for everyday life. Five stand out, each with a distinct function and a distinct discipline.
The first is the Baglamukhi mool mantra. This is the root mantra of the Pitambara Devi, the eighth Mahavidya. It is a stambhan mantra — its function is the arrest of harmful motion, whether legal, social, or unseen. It is traditionally received in person from a qualified guru along with the appropriate viniyoga, nyasa, and dhyana. We do not publish the full mantra in print or online; this is a tradition we maintain out of respect for the seriousness of the practice. A devotee who genuinely needs this mantra should approach an acharya in person, undertake the formal diksha, and learn the practice in its proper context.
The second is the Mahamrityunjaya mantra of Lord Shiva. This is the great healing mantra, used for protection from untimely death, for recovery from serious illness, and for the easing of profound psychological suffering. Unlike the Baglamukhi mool mantra, the Mahamrityunjaya is fully public and may be practised by any devotee without formal diksha, though it gains depth when received from a guru. The mantra is: Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam, urvarukamiva bandhanan mrityor mukshiya maamritat. It is traditionally chanted in cycles of one hundred and eight, ideally on a rudraksha mala, with attention to clear pronunciation and steady breath.
The third is the Gayatri mantra, the mother of all mantras, addressed to the solar effulgence as the source of intelligence. The Gayatri is recommended as a daily practice for every devotee regardless of ishta-devata. It is chanted at the three sandhyas — dawn, noon, and dusk — though many devotees today practise it only at dawn. The mantra is: Om bhur bhuvah svah, tat savitur varenyam, bhargo devasya dhimahi, dhiyo yo nah prachodayat. Even a single mala of Gayatri daily, sustained over months, produces noticeable changes in clarity of thought and steadiness of mind.
The fourth is the Ganesh mantra, Om gam ganapataye namah. This is the mantra of beginnings, of removal of obstacles, and of the opening of the path before any new undertaking. Devotees recite it at the start of the day, before any important meeting, and at the commencement of any larger sadhana. It is short, easy to memorise, and remarkably effective at producing a settled, auspicious state at the beginning of any activity.
The fifth is the Saraswati mantra, Om aim saraswatyai namah. This is the mantra of learning, of clear speech, and of artistic capacity. Students preparing for examinations, professionals preparing for important presentations, writers and artists seeking clarity of expression — all benefit from a regular practice of this mantra. It is particularly powerful when practised at dawn during the bright fortnight.
Pronunciation matters more than many devotees realise. Sanskrit mantra is calibrated to specific phonetic frequencies, and casual mispronunciation reduces its effect substantially. If you are learning a mantra from text, listen to a reliable recitation by a trained pandit before fixing your own pronunciation. The few minutes spent on this at the beginning saves years of practising a slightly wrong version.
The mala matters too. The traditional materials are: rudraksha for Shiva mantras, tulsi for Vishnu mantras, sphatika (crystal) for Devi mantras in general, haldi (turmeric) for Baglamukhi specifically, and lotus seed for Lakshmi. Each material carries its own subtle quality and reinforces the mantra it is used for. A devotee may keep separate malas for different mantras and store them in clean cotton bags when not in use.
The discipline of mantra is simple to state and demanding to maintain. Choose a fixed time. Choose a fixed seat. Choose a fixed number of repetitions — one mala, three malas, eleven malas — and complete that count every day without exception. The discipline of returning to the same practice every day at the same time is what produces the cumulative effect. Sporadic mantra practice produces sporadic results.
A note on intention. Mantra practice undertaken with the intention of harming another person produces karmic consequence that no amount of subsequent mantra can fully clear. This is not a metaphor. The same mantra that produces protection when practised with right intention produces backlash when practised with wrong intention. The discipline of intention is therefore inseparable from the discipline of practice.
Begin with one mantra. Establish the discipline. Once the practice is steady — once you have completed a full mandala of forty days without missing a single day — you may add a second mantra. Trying to maintain five mantras simultaneously without first establishing one of them well is the most common mistake new devotees make. The depth of practice matters far more than the number of practices.
