How the nine nights of Navratri intersect with the ten great wisdom-goddesses of tantric tradition.
Navratri — the nine nights — is the most auspicious window in the Hindu calendar for sadhana of the Devi. It occurs four times a year, with the two principal observances being Chaitra Navratri in spring and Sharad Navratri in autumn. The other two, Magha and Ashadha Navratris, are observed primarily by Tantric practitioners and are known as Gupta Navratris — the secret nine nights — during which the deeper levels of Devi sadhana are traditionally undertaken.
The public face of Navratri is the worship of the nine forms of Durga — Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri. These nine forms are the most accessible expressions of Devi for the household devotee, and the festival as observed across India centres on their daily worship, the recitation of Durga Saptashati, and the cultural celebration that surrounds them.
Beneath this public observance, the Tantric tradition uses Navratri for sadhana of the ten Mahavidyas — Kali, Tara, Tripura Sundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Baglamukhi, Matangi, and Kamala. The Mahavidyas are not opposed to the nine Durgas; they are the deeper, more specialised expressions of the same cosmic feminine principle. The nine nights provide a uniquely concentrated window in which Mahavidya sadhana, normally undertaken across longer periods, can produce dense and rapid results.
For devotees of Maa Baglamukhi, Sharad Navratri is particularly significant. While Baglamukhi Jayanti, which falls in the bright fortnight of Vaishakh, is the principal annual day of her worship, the nine nights of Sharad Navratri offer a sustained window in which a structured sankalp can be undertaken from start to finish. Many devotees who cannot commit to a longer anushthana through the year use these nine nights to complete a focused practice.
A typical Sharad Navratri sankalp for a Baglamukhi devotee unfolds as follows. On the first day, the sankalp is taken in the morning with kalash sthapana — the establishment of the sacred water pot — and the recitation of the formal sankalp shloka stating the devotee's name, gotra, and intention. The personal anushthana — daily mantra count, dietary discipline, and dress code — begins from this day and continues for nine consecutive days without break.
Each evening through the nine nights, the devotee performs a small home puja before the Baglamukhi image: the lighting of a ghee lamp, the offering of yellow flowers, the chanting of the prescribed number of malas of the mool mantra, and the recitation of the Baglamukhi stotra. The dietary discipline is sattvic — no onion, garlic, alcohol, non-vegetarian food, or stimulants. One meal a day is the traditional standard, with fruit and milk permitted at other times.
Alongside the personal practice at home, many devotees sponsor a parallel sankalp havan at the Nalkheda peeth for the full nine days. The temple havan provides the anchored ritual structure, performed by lineage-trained pandits with full samagri at the moolpeeth, while the personal practice provides the daily discipline that connects the devotee to the temple ritual at a sustained level. The two together produce an effect substantially greater than either alone.
On the ninth day — Mahanavami — the sankalp culminates in a poornahuti, the final offering that closes the havan. The devotee, whether present at the temple or participating remotely by live video, makes a final mental offering of the entire sadhana to the goddess. The remaining samagri is offered to the fire. The kalash water is sprinkled on the participants. Prasad is distributed. On the tenth day, Vijayadashami, the sankalp is considered fully active in the world and the devotee returns to ordinary diet and activity.
Several practical notes for devotees considering a Navratri sankalp. Begin preparation at least two weeks in advance. Arrange the dietary supplies — fresh fruit, milk, kuttu atta, sendha namak, ghee — so that the dietary discipline is not disrupted by last-minute shopping. Identify a small space in your home that can be kept clean and dedicated to the practice for the nine days. Inform your immediate family so that they understand the dietary and behavioural restrictions you are observing.
Maintain mauna — silence — to the extent possible, especially during the morning practice. Avoid social media and news consumption during the nine days; the field of attention you cultivate in the morning is easily disturbed by the noise of unfiltered information. Sleep early. Wake before dawn. Bathe before practice. These practical disciplines compound, and by the seventh or eighth day they produce a state of clarity and steadiness that is itself one of the principal fruits of Navratri sadhana.
For devotees facing a serious life situation — a court case, a hostile rivalry, an unseen attack — a Sharad Navratri sankalp at Nalkheda combined with personal home practice is one of the most powerful interventions available within the tradition. Coordinate with us at least a month in advance so that the sankalp can be properly arranged at the moolpeeth, the samagri prepared, and the live video connection tested before the first day.
